It's common knowledge that the Giants have struggled on the road this season. However, the Giants have won their last 2 road games that Tim Lincecum has started. Lincecum has allowed 3 or less runs in 10 straight starts, and has held opposing teams to a .208 Baa when pitching on the road this season. Lincecum's counterpart will be Paul Maholm of the Pirates. Maholm has been inconsistent over his last 5 games, allowing 2,6,2,5, and 8 runs over that span. Pittsburgh is 1-7 over their last 8 games, and will be facing the best the Giants have to offer on Friday night. While the Giants have struggled on the road, I have to believe Lincecum gives them their best chance at getting a win. Take the Giants to get a rare road win over a struggling Pirates team as our MLB Pitching Mismatch of the day.

Both of these teams are in what I like to call mini offensive slumps. The Twins have scored 2.54 runs a game vs righties over their last 5 games while the Rays have scored 2.37 runs a game vs righties over their last 5. Now both of these struggling offenses get a shot at very decent pitchers in Blackburn(Twins) and Garza(Rays). Blackburn has allowed a total of 5 earned runs over his last 4 starts while Garza has allowed 2 or less runs in 4 of his last 6 starts. Both have pitched very well in their day games, Blackburn(.210 Baa) and Garza(.211 Baa), and should be able to stay under the total. We have two pretty good bullpens, to go along with an umpire who has a called 4 overs compared to 10 unders, and the under has hit in 11 of Minnesota's last 16 road games. The Under is the play today.

Every once in a while you run across a pitcher that performs better on the road as compared to at home. Some experts say it's because their is less pressure on the starter because he is not trying to perform for the home team crowd. Whatever the reason, it applies to Nick Blackburn of the Twins tonight at Detroit. Blackburn has a 2.77 Era when traveling compared to a 4.50 Era when pitching at home. He also pitches better at night and outdoors as compared to the confines of a dome. His counterpart tonight will be Rick Porcello of the Tigers. Porcello has only one home start, which really doesn't give us a good indication of how capable he is while pitching at home. What we do know, is that he was hammered in his only home start by the Yankees last Wednesday. In that game he gave up 6 earned runs in only 3 innings before being chased. The Tigers are also concerned about the fact that they are hitting a meager .214 vs right handed pitchers over their last 5 games, and .203 over their last 10. They will try to avoid a sweep of a two game series against a Twins team that is having no problem scoring runs of late. In fact they are hitting .296 and scoring 6.56 runs a game over their last 5, and should have no problems scoring against a right handed Porcello tonight. Minnesota is 4-2 over their last 6 games, and have handled Detroit lately, going 5-1 over their last 6 in Detroit.

The Marlins have lost 7 straight after starting the season by winning 11 of their first 12 games. A huge part of the problem over their most recent struggles can be attributed to their inability to hit right handed pitchers. Their hitting .189 against righties over their last 5 games while scoring a measly 2.37 runs per outing. Not to say that hitting is the only problem. The bullpen has fell apart also, struggling with a 9.66 Era over their last 3 games with a 2.12 Whip. The Marlins will be sending Ricky Nolasco to face the Mets for the 2nd time this season. He lost the first meeting, although not pitching to badly, by allowing 4 earned runs over 5 innings. However, Nolasco has struggled when pitching on the road. He has a 6.60 Era and has yet to win since his opening season victory over Washington. The Mets will send Livan Hernandez to try for win number 2 vs the Marlins. He pitched his best game of the season against this same Florida team he will be facing tonight. He has historically pitched well against them, with his teams going 13-7 in 26 career starts vs them. The Mets are a solid 5-2 in their last 7 home games, and 6-3 in their last 9 home games vs the Marlins.

Two struggling offenses square off once again in this match up. The Reds have scored a total of 6 runs in the first 3 games of this 4 game series. The Astros haven't done much better, scoring 10 runs, while going 1-2 vs the Reds in the first 3 games. Houston looks to even it up tonight with Mike Hampton towing the rubber. Hampton has surprised everyone, including myself, by allowing only 3 earned runs and 8 hits in 11 innings to start the season. He will be opposed by Bronson Arroyo of the Reds, who is also off to a decent start by allowing 6 earned runs and 12 hits over 12 innings. One huge disparity in this game, is that the Reds are hitting .168 vs lefties on the season, and an uncanny .109 vs lefties on the road. Now, I know Mike Hampton hasn't pitched like an all star the past couple of seasons, but this is one of those stats, that you can't pass up. Don't forget, Hampton is known for swinging the hot bat, and is capable of plating runs. Let's side with Houston to even up this series, behind a solid outing from Hampton.

UFC 97 odds - Quarry, McDonald go to war

As much as the Silva vs Leites odds will get all the glory in UFC 97 betting, the Quarry vs McDonald odds, considered by some to be the No. 3 event on the card, could easily produce the most tightly contested match of the night.

Nate "Rock" Quarry (16-3) goes head-to-head with Jason "The Athlete" McDonald (22-11) in a battle between two athletic fighters who even have similar recent track records at the sportsbook, as both were choked out by fast-rising Demian Maia.

Quarry is a wrestler by trade but has enjoyed most of his UFC betting success by pounding opponents. Of his five UFC odds victories, only one has come via decision, with the other four coming via impressive knockouts. MMA betting fans would thus be wrong to label him a one-dimensional fighter. His most recent fight was a loss to Maia in which he seemed overmatched on the ground, so he may be better off standing against McDonald.

McDonald is another middleweight with a superb ability to finish fights -- all but one of his 22 career victories was a decision. He's an extreme submission specialist who wins most of his fights by choking out his opponents, so online betting fans can expect him to try and do the same against Quarry. He may be less versatile than Quarry, though, and will almost have to take him to the ground to win.

I like Quarry to prevail in the Quarry vs McDonald odds . It's not that McDonald hasn't fought anyone -- it's that he hasn't beaten anyone. He consistently crumbles against top competition, having lost to Wilson Gouveia, Rich Franklin and Maia. Quarry is probably less experienced than McDonald, but he's been more dominant in his career so far. Bet on Quarry, but don't forget that Canadian McDonald is fighting in his home country.

The Raptors haven't officially been eliminated from the playoffs, but one more loss may knock them out of contention. Look for a very good, all around effort from this Raptor team that has won 6 of 7 and 7 of their last 10 games. The New York Knicks are a completely different story. They were knocked out of the playoff picture on Saturday by this very same Raptor team that they will have to face today in a home vs home series. The Knicks have lost 10 of 11 as a direct result of falling apart on the defensive side of the ball. They have given up 100+ points in 8 of their last 10 games, and will be facing a Toronto Raptors team that has averaged scoring 112 points a game over their last 5 games. The Knicks haven't won at the Canada Air Centre in over 5 years, and I don't see it happening today.

Chris Paul(21 PPG) continues to lead the way for the Hornets, while Joe Johnson(21 PPG) leads the way for the Hawks. Both teams are at pivotal stretches in their quest for the playoffs. New Orleans has played very well of late, and should be able to pull a win out on the road over an Atlanta team they have dominated of late.

Not afraid to lay the small number with an Austin Peay team that has won 9 of the last 10 meetings between these two schools. Even though their playing at home, Jacksonville St. will be hard pressed to slow down the Governor's Drake Reed(22 PPG) and Wes Channels(17 PPG). Neither team is known for being solid on defense, so this could turn into a shootout. Jacksonville St. has lost 3 straight and 7 of its last 10 games and is 5-11 in conference play. Austin Peay on the other hand is 6-4 in their last 10 games, and is a solid 10-5 in conference play. I will go with history and the fact that the Governors are 8-2 after the spread in their last 10 road games.

#540 Central Florida Knights -12 1/2

Central Florida has been scoring at a torrid pace over their past 5 games, averaging 71 points an outing, while hitting 52% from beyond the 3 point line. Even more impressive is the fact that they shot 73% from downtown in their last game against Marshall, connecting on 11 of 15 from 3 point range. Central Florida games are turning out to be the Jermaine Taylor show. The Senior Guard is averaging 24 points and 5 rebounds a game.

SMU has lost 4 of their last 5 games, and 6 straight road games. To put it mildly, they have yet to win a road game this season! They are led by Freshman Guard Paul McCoy who is averaging 13 points and 4 rebounds a game. Center Bamba Fall leads all Mustangs with 7 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots a game.

This will be a total mismatch of major proportions. Central Florida is an impressive 10-2 at home with losses to Florida and Memphis, while SMU has yet to win on the road this year. SMU has recent road losses to both Rice and Marshall, two teams with overall losing records that happened to break losing streaks of two or more losses with wins over SMU. Twelve and a half points should be no problem for the Knights at home tonight.

Take the Central Florida Knights -12 1/2 for 3-Units!

Both of these teams have losing records, yet one seems to have a clear advantage over the other, especially in past match ups. Fresno St. has won 4 straight over Cal Poly dating back to 1998! Now the Mustangs find themselves in a rare favorite role over the Bulldogs. They catch a Fresno St. team that is on a two game losing streak, having lost road games to Creighton and St. Louis. Both these teams had winning records, and in fact all of the teams that Fresno St. lost to had winning records except Oregon St.(4-5). Cal Poly just lost to a 4-9 CSU Bakersfield team, and can't be feeling good about the way the season is going. Fresno St. on the other hand gets their first real winnable game on the road against a team they have managed to handle very easily in the past. Fresno St. is shooting a steady 45% from the field on the season, and in road games. Cal Poly on the other hand is shooting a miserable 35 % from the field in home games, and will have a tough time covering the spread in this game against the Bulldogs of Fresno St.

The Jets and Broncos have something in common. Do you know what it is? I do. They both lost to the lowly Oakland Raiders this year. Denver lost by a 10-30 score to Oakland just last week, while the Jets lost 13-16 to the same Oakland team back in the middle of October.

One thing has remained a constant in all of the Broncos games. They give up lots of points!!! They are ranked #28 in the league with 28 points allowed per game, and will be facing a Jets team that is ranked #2 in the league with 29 points scored a game. The Jets Brett Favre has been spreading the wealth in the receiving corps. He has 5 different receivers that are averaging over 20 receiving yards per game.

One of the reasons for the poor defensive play of the Broncos is the fact that they very rarely create turnovers, if fact they are last in the NFL with just under one takeaway per game. The one positive that the Broncos have going for them is Jay Cutler and the Broncos offense. The offense is ranked #2 in the league in total offensive yards, but have struggled in the red zone, which accounts for the #15 ranked offense in total points scored.

The wild card that makes the Jets the play, despite the high number, is the way their defense has played over the past few weeks. They did allow the Patriots to score 31 a couple of weeks ago, but other than that lone setback, have held 5 of its last 7 opponents to 17 or less points. Denver on the other hand has allowed 6 of its last 10 opponents to score over 30 points, while holding only one opponent under 20 points in this span. With the weapons that Favre has at his disposal in the receiving corps, and with Thomas Jones doing the damage with the running game, I see no way that they Broncos defense can keep the Jets from scoring, and scoring, and scoring.

Take the New York Jets -9 for 4-Units!

Broncos are 8-21-1 ATS in their last 30 games on grass.

Broncos are 4-12 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

Jets are 4-0 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

Jets allow the third least rushing yards in the league at 78.0 per game

New Mexico's defense has really stepped up their level of play over their last 3 games, allowing a total of 28 points scored, while giving up a total of 269 yards a game. On offense they rely heavily on a rushing attack that has averaged 223 yards a game this season, and 293 yards a game over their last 3 games. And yes, I know that New Mexico faced two to the worst teams in the Mountain West Conference in Wyoming and San Diego St. But they also held a very good BYU team to just 21 points scored a couple of weeks ago. Air Force comes in also relying heavily on the running game, averaging 300 yards a game on the season, and 324 over their last 3 games. They are a solid team defensively allowing 304 total yards a game which ranks 28th nationally. Both teams are so successful rushing the ball, that they very rarely have to pass. This accounts for the less than average numbers in the passing game for both teams. This is an indication that the team that is able to stop the run will have the best chance at winning this game. The New Mexico Lobos have the 22nd ranked rushing defense in the nation, and although they will have their hands full, should be able to slow down the Air Force rushing attack. Lets side with the better defensive team in this Thursday night match up.

#118 Northwestern Wildcats +1

Northwestern has had a week off to rest and prepare for this matchup with rival Michigan St. Last year Northwestern won at Michigan St. in a 48-41 shootout. Wildcat running back Tyrell Sutton missed that game with an injury, but quarterback C.J. Bacher improvised by throwing for a school record 520 yards with 5 passing touchdowns. Northwestern has won 2 of the last 3 meetings and 4 of the last 6 between these two schools. This season has seen much improvement from both defenses. Northwestern ranks 13th nationally in scoring defense while Michigan St. ranks 22nd. Northwestern leads the Big Ten with 17 sacks and may be able to get pressure on Spartan quarterback Brian Hoyer who is completing just 48% of his passes on the season. This will cause problems for a Spartan offense in third and long situations. The Spartans have been shorthanded in the secondary, and will have a hard time stopping the Northwestern offense, that will be able to run or throw pretty much at will. A very interesting trend for this game is that the Wildcats are 6-1 their last 7 games against the spread following a bye week. This is an indication that Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald is very efficient at getting his team prepared for the upcoming opponent when idle. The Spartans are also 0-4 against the spread in the last 4 meetings.

I realize that this may be a lot of points, but after careful consideration, and many hours of looking at this game, I see no reason that South Florida should not be able to cover this number. South Florida's opponents have went 11/11 on the season, and the Bulls have played and won 3 games on the road. They also beat a Kansas team that was ranked #13 in the nation at the time, at home on September 12th. Pittsburgh on the other hand played 3 home games to open the season, losing their home opener to a Bowling Green squad that now has a 2-2 record on the season. They trailed a 1/4 Syracuse team 24-13 midway through the 3rd quarter last week, before finally pulling away with a 34-24 win. Pittsburgh relies heavily on the run, with quarterback Bill Stull throwing for just 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions on the season. This may play right into the strength of the Bulls, who have allowed just under 59 rushing yards a game on the season. The Pittsburgh defense has been decent this season, allowing just over 300 yards a game, but will have their hands full trying to stop a Bulls offense that is averaging 201 rushing yards and 263 passing yards a game. Looking at both teams average yard per rush, I notice that South Florida averages 4.5 yards per rush, while Pittsburgh averages 4.1 yards per rush. Defensively the Bulls are quite stingy giving up a low 2.1 yards per rush, while the Panthers give up a respectful 3.8 yards per rush. What happens if the Panthers are unable to run the ball? This may very well happen, and if it does, Bill Stull will be asked to move the ball through the air! Uh,,,this is the same Bill Stull that has thrown just 2 touchdowns, and is averaging a meager 5.8 yards per attempt on the season. Long story short----if Pittsburgh is not able to run the ball and falls behind, they will not be able to catch up with this Bulls team that will be able to move the ball with an experienced Matt Grothe behind center. Oh...one more thing, Pittsburgh struggled with a small crowd of 27,000 last week at Syracuse. How will they handle a huge crowd of 58,000+ pumped up and ready for this Nationally Televised Espn game at South Florida? They won't!

Southern Miss sports a solid 3-0 record in this series dating back to 2005. In their last game at home against Marshall, Southern Miss decimated the Thundering Herd 42-7. I don't look for such a lopsided score this go around, but the Golden Eagles are playing well this season with Austin Davis under center. He has thrown for 693 yards with 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 3 games on the season. The Freshman is completing 64% of his passes and has a solid rushing game to help him along. Southern Miss has the number one ranked rushing attack in C-USA with Damion Fletcher leading the way with 113 yards a game and 5.9 yards a carry. Quarterback Mark Cann is completing just 51% of his passes with 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He will have his hands full with a Southern Miss defense that has a league leading 10 takeaways on the season. Marshall has a -2 turnover Margin on the season, and turnovers will be their downfall today.

Tennessee may be better off that Vince Young hurt his knee. A veteran Kerry Collins steps in and should be able to provide a much needed leadership role for a team that may have been distracted by all that happened with Young this week. The running game netted 137 yards last week, but with Young under center, the passing game struggled. If fact Young had just 16 passing yards in the first half last week, and Collins stepped in and provided 65 yards in going 2/2 in his short stint to finish the game. Baltimore was able to shut down the Offensive passing machine of the Bengals, and although I don't look for another disappointing game from Palmer, he will have his hands full against this Titans defense that limited Jacksonville to just 33 rushing yards, and sacked the quarterback 7 times while forcing 3 turnovers.

This matchup features another rookie quarterback getting the start for the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan who had a magnificent career at Boston College, now takes over the helms for a Falcon team that is ready to put the Michael Vick era behind them. Ryan and the Falcons are learning a new offensive system, while their counterparts in Detroit have no such problems. Lions Veteran signal caller Jon Kitna has passed for over 4,000 yards in back to back seasons. He brings back his favorite targets in Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams, as well as adding Rudi Johnson in the backfield. The Falcons have openly stated that this season will be a learning experience not only for Matt Ryan, but for the team as a unit. Sounds to me like they have low expectations early on, and are already making excuses for expected losses.

Ok guys, here goes our first 4-Unit release for the 2008 college football season. The Rice Owls return the majority of a high powered offense that set numerous school records, and averaged 495 yards a game over their last 7 games last season. There are no questions concerning the offense. There is a big question mark concerning the defense, however. Last season, the Owls defense was riddled with injuries from the very first game of the season. The injuries were so extent, that at one point they were forced to use stand out receiver James Casey at the defensive end position. Even after using 10 defensive starting lineups last season, the Owls still managed to be at the top of C-USA in the turnover margin. The Owls will be facing an SMU Mustang team that is expected to have a huge turnaround in head coach June Jones first season. Jones comes from Hawaii where he is known for turning out strong quarterbacks that put up points in a hurry. Let's get the right to the point here. Jones will be starting a true freshman under center. They will also be starting 13 true freshman on its two deep roster on Friday night. Jones is clearly building for the future. Look for many common freshman mistakes in Junes new offense. Keep in mind that the home team is 10-2 ATS in the last 12 meetings, and that Rice has went 6-0 ATS in its last 6 meetings at home vs SMU.

Shawn Marcum was very unimpressive over his last couple of starts. Both were road starts, that saw him give up 10 runs over 10 innings of work. Today he gets to redeem himself back at home, where he has given up a total of 3 earned runs over his last 3 starts. The last time he faced Seattle he lasted 7 innings, giving up 1 earned run, while striking out a season high 9 hitters. Marcum will be opposed by Jarrod Washburn of the Mariners. Washburn has been the victim of a very stagnant Mariners offense, that has scored a total of 7 runs in his last 3 starts, all resulting in losses. The Mariners have lost 7 straight, and are in danger of extending that losing streak to 8 against this Toronto team that has won 5 in a row, and are 9-1 in their last 10 home games. The Blue Jays are killing left handed pitching, hitting .400 and scoring 11.05 runs a game vs lefties over their last 5, and hitting .378 and scoring 10.98 vs lefties over their last 10. Seattle on the other hand can't find a rhythm against righties, and are hitting .194 while scoring 1.71 runs a game over their last 5 games. I found a very impressive Umpire stat for this matchup, and I must say it favors the Blue Jays very heavily! The Home team has won 10 straight games when Umpire Bill Welke has been behind the plate. Even more impressive is the fact that the Mariners are 1-4 over their last 5 games that Welke called when they were on the road, while the Blue Jays have won 3 straight in games that he Umpired for them.

Talk about a guy wanting to stay in the Majors, and not be demoted!!! Justin Masterson was supposed to be filling in for injured Red Sox pitchers Daisuke Matsuzaka and Bartolo Colon. The Red Sox coaching staff keep waiting for Masterson to make a mistake, and he keeps pitching to perfection. He has allowed 2 runs or less in 4 of his 6 starts this season, and has made it to the 6th inning in 5 of 6 starts. Masterson is holding opposing teams to a .176 batting average while maintaining excellent control with a 1.08 whip on the season. He will be opposed by Arizona's Doug Davis. Davis has also been a huge success story on the season, after having thyroid cancer surgery on May 23rd. His numbers for the season, give no indication of any time off whatsoever. He allowed 1 earned run over his last 2 starts to American League teams Oakland and Kansas City, which both happened to be home games at Arizona. Jorge Campillo will be getting the start for the Braves on Friday night. Campillo is coming off of his best performance of the season, allowing 7 hits and 2 earned runs over 8 innings against the Angels in a losing effort on Sunday. He has pitched well at home, with the Braves winning 3 of his 4 home starts. Erik Bedard gets the start for the Mariners. The Mariners have lost 4 of Bedards last 5 starts, while Bedard has lost 4 straight road games. Seattle has all kinds of problems going into Atlanta. Besides having an interim Manager, they have not been able to generate any kind of offense. The Colorado Rockies try for the sweep in their series against the Indians tonight. The Rockies will send Jorge De La Rosa to face a struggling Indians offense. Don't be fooled by De La Rosa's Era of 6.89. He is not the same pitcher that started the season by giving up 9 earned runs in 4 innings of work against the Dodgers. He opened the season with an Era of 20.25 and has brought it back down to 6.89 with a few good outings from the bullpen, and his most recent start against the White Sox. In the White Sox game he allowed 1 hit and no runs over 5 innings, while striking out 8. Jeremy Sowers gets the start for the Indians. Sowers has struggled this season, with opposing teams hitting .346 against him, and he has yet to make it past the 5th inning in any of his starts. The Rockies have played well at home lately, going 7-3 over their last 10, while the Indians have went 4-6 over their last 10 road games. The Rockies are also hitting .327 and scoring 5.79 runs a game over their last 10 verse lefties, while the Indians are hitting .229 and scoring 4.96 runs a game vs lefties over their last 10. With Sowers struggling and not getting very deep into the games, you can rest assured that the Indian bullpen will see extended action tonight. This scenario plays in our favor, as the Indian bullpen has a 7.63 Era with opponents hitting .306 against them over their last 5 games. The Rockies bullpen has been more reliable, with a 2.65 Era and opponents hitting .250 against them over their last 5 outings.

One has to wonder how the New York Mets will respond on a West Coast road trip, after all that's happening with Manager Willie Randolf and his future status as the Mets Skipper. They head out west after going 3-7 over their last 10 road games, and now they get to face an Angels team that is looking to turn things around after going 5-5 over their last 10 at home. The Angels will send Jered Weaver to the mound and are looking for continued success after winning 5 of his last 6 starts. He has been very good at home, having allowed 39 hits and 15 earned runs over 44 innings of work at home for the season. Opposing teams are hitting .236 against Weaver at Angel Stadium. Weaver will be opposed by Mike Pelfrey of the Mets. Pelfrey has pitched very well over his last 3 outings, but does not have a win over that span thanks to a blown save and very little run support. Despite good numbers of late, Pelfrey has struggled on the road this season, allowing 35 hits and 16 earned runs over 20 innings of work. Opposing teams are hitting .402 against Pelfrey when he has pitched on the road this season. The Angels should be a safe play tonight, with the visiting Mets hitting .237 and scoring 3.41 runs a game against righties over their last 10 outings.

One thing I have noticed about Andy Sonnastine is that Tampa Bay wins when he pitches. The Rays have won 8 of his last 10 starts, despite mediocre numbers from Sonnastine. He has pitched well over his last 3 games though , giving up 3 runs or less over 15 innings of work. He has also shown much improved control over his last 3 games, walking only 2 batters and allowing 0 home runs. Sonnastine will be opposed by Florida's Ryan Tucker. Tucker is making his second start of the season, after a successful debut against the Reds on Sunday. Tucker gave up 2 hits over 5 innings of work in a game that the Marlins won 9-2. The only negative in his debut was that he walked 5 batters. The Rays are coming off of a 3-6 road trip but have went 8-2 over their last 10 home games, while the Marlins have went 3-7 over their last 10 on the road. Tampa Bay is glad to be back home, and they have done nothing but win when Sonnastine has been on the mound.

Backe has allowed 3 or less earned runs in 4 of his 5 home starts, while opponents are hitting .230 against him in his home games. Backe will be opposed by Manny Parra of the Brewers. Parra has given up 3 or more runs in 4 of his 5 road starts, while opponents are hitting .352 against him in his road starts. This could spell trouble, as the Astros are hitting .313 against lefties at home this season, while the Brewers are hitting .237 against righties on the road. Look for Backe to have another strong outing at home, and for the Astros offense to get the job done against Parra, who has struggled on the road.

Now that Vernon Wells is back in the lineup, those offensive numbers may even go higher!

Arizona has been impressive this season, but they do have a weakness. They have been vulnerable when playing on the road. They are 11-13 on the road this season, and have struggled at Miller Park in the past, going 4-9 dating back to the 2004 season. Milwaukee has won 3 straight, and sends Jeff Suppan against his former team. Suppan has been nearly perfect in his home starts this season, giving up 21 hits and 3 earned runs over 29 innings of work. The Brewers have won 3 of his 4 home starts. Suppan will be opposed by Doug Davis, who will also be pitching against his former team. Davis has given up 14 hits and 7 earned runs over his last 12 innings of work since coming back from thyroid cancer surgery. Last season Davis gave up 9 hits and 8 earned runs over 8 innings against the Brewers. He will have his hands full against them tonight, as they are coming off of a 3 game sweep of the Astros. They outscored the Astros 19-3 over the weekend, while the Diamondbacks won 2 of 3 over the Nationals. The Diamondbacks are hitting .212 against righties over their last 10 games, while hitting .188 on the road against righties this season. The Brewers are hitting .289 against lefties over their last 10 games, and are hitting .255 at Miller Park against lefties this season. Look for another impressive home start from Suppan, and for the Milwaukee offense to have another successful game against Davis.

Big Ben has allowed a home run in 6 straight games that he has started, but the homers haven't really hurt him that much, as he has very good command of the strike zone this season. In fact he has walked only one batter in his last 5 starts while striking out nearly 6 hitters a game over his last 5. Oh, and batters are hitting only .233 against him this season, which has helped him jump out to a 5-1 record. Sheets will be opposed by Houston's Brian Moehler. Moehler pitched his best game of the season on Saturday against the Phillies, giving up 4 hits and 2 earned runs over 6 innings of work. That was the first time this season that Moehler made it to the 6th inning. He has also been giving up the long ball this season, and has given up 4 over his last 5 games. Opponents are hitting .292 against him this season, and he has given up 35 hits in 28 innings of work. Ben Sheets is not the guy you want to face when you are struggling against righties. The Astros are hitting .211 against righties over their last 5 games while the Brewers are hitting .261 against righties over their last 5. This is only Sheets 4th home start of the season, so look for a strong performance before the home crowd with a huge strikeout total.

#913/914 Washington Nationals/Arizona Diamondbacks Under 9

3-Units (8:40 P.M. CST)

Sure, Tim Redding has bad numbers against Arizona. But don't let the 6.30 ERA against the Diamondbacks fool you. He hasn't faced them since 2005, over three years ago. His numbers have improved each year since 2005, and it looks as if he is having his best season of his career in 2008. He has given up 54 hits and 25 earned runs over 62 innings of work and has a respectable 3.59 era to show for his efforts. This season, opposing teams are hitting just .229 against him, where in 2005 they were hitting .328. One might ask why the line has moved steadily upward even though the Diamondbacks have lost 4 straight? One reason is that Redding struggled against Milwaukee in his last outing. He held them off the board for 5 straight innings but gave up 6 runs in the 6th. Redding's opponent will be Micah Owings. His numbers are very similar to Reddings. Owings has a decent 3.73 era to go along with 54 hits and 26 earned runs over 62 innings of work. Opponents are hitting a low .226 against him on the season. He is in very good form, allowing 5 earned runs over his last 3 starts. Offensively, both teams are struggling, especially against right handed pitchers. Washington is hitting .195 and scoring just over 2 runs a game against righties in their last 5 games, while Arizona is hitting .215 and scoring just under 3 runs a game in their last 5 games against righties. Look for a low scoring contest until the bullpens take over, at which time a few runs may be scored, as both bullpens have been average of late.

St. Louis pitcher Kyle Lohse has gotten better and better over his last 4 starts. But it would take a near perfect game to improve upon his last outing that saw him pitch 6 shutout innings, giving up only 6 hits against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has given up 6 earned runs over his last 3 games, that were all quality starts. He will be opposed by Roy Oswalt of the Astros. Oswalt is just a fraction of his old self this season. He has allowed 85 hits and 43 earned runs over 69 innings of work this season. Even more disturbing is the fact that he has allowed 27 hits and 14 earned runs over his last 20 innings pitched, spanning 3 games. One thing that I like to look at is how many home runs a pitcher has allowed compared to the other pitcher. We see a big difference in this game tonight. Lohse has allowed 2 home runs in 63 innings of work, while Oswalt has allowed 15 home runs in 69 innings. This is a big disparity, and shows that Oswalt does not have command of the strike zone like he did in past years. The Cardinals are hitting .286 as a team against righties at home this season, while the Astros are hitting .244 as a team on the road. Look for Oswalt's home run number to go up after tonights game.

This game may very well decide the fate of Andy Sonnanstines career. If there has been a kink in the armour of the Tampa Bay pitching staff, Sonnanstine has been that kink. He has allowed 35 hits and 17 earned runs in his last 25 innings of work over 4 games. Despite the dismal numbers, the Rays have won 6 of his last 7 starts, mainly because they have been outscoring their opponents. Sonnanstine will be opposed by Vicente Padilla of Texas. Texas has won 6 straight games that Padilla has started. Padilla has given up 33 hits and 9 earned runs in his last 38 innings of work over. Texas has been held to 7 runs over their last 3 games, but have a huge .385 batting average and 9 runs scored against righties in their last 5 games. Tampa has also done well over their last 5 games against righties, with a .338 batting average while scoring 7 runs a game against them in their last 5 games. I will side with the more experienced Padilla in this matchup, and look for the Rangers to put up a huge offensive number tonight.

Gavin Floyd gets the start for the White Sox. He has been exceptionally well when pitching at home, allowing only 7 hits and 5 earned runs in 21 innings of work. Opponents are having a hard time figuring him out, and a .101 BAA and 0.83 Whip shows that he has excellent control while dominating opposing hitters. Floyd will be opposed by Joe Saunders of the Angels. Saunders is also having an excellent year. He has given up 52 hits and 17 earned runs in 61 innings of work. The one team that seems to have figured him out is the White Sox. He has allowed 10 hits and 8 earned runs in 9 innings pitched against Chicago. Chicago has hit .295 against lefties in their last 5 games, which has help contribute to this 8 game win streak. The Angels have scored 2.9 runs a game over their last 8 and should have trouble against Floyd who excels at home.

When comparing these two starting pitchers, I see a lot of similarities. Both have low era's just above 3 for the season. Santana has won 5 games, while Hudson has won 6, and both have low whips which suggest they have excellent control. However, when looking at what each pitcher has done recently, I see a disparity. Hudson has given up 13 hits and 7 earned runs over his last 19 innings pitched, while Santana has given up 23 hits and 8 earned runs over his last 19 innings pitched. Atlanta is playing very well at home where they are 19-5 on the season and have scored 23 runs in the first 3 games against the Mets, while the Mets have scored a total of 7 runs in the first 3 games against the Braves pitching staff. Santana is a good pitcher, but I must question how he will do against a Braves team that is scoring runs in droves, and has a .309 batting average against lefties at Turner Field this season. I am not too concerned with Hudsons last outing against the Oakland A's, a game that saw him give up 5 earned runs in only 5 innings of work. Hudson only allowed 5 hits in that game, but issued a season high 5 walks, that ultimately cost him the game. One thing to note about this game is that Jerry Meals will be the Umpire for this game, and the Atlanta Braves have won 7 straight games when he was behind the plate.

They will be facing a struggling Milwaukee team that has lost 5 in a row and 9 straight games on the road. A 5-12 record spells double trouble for the Brewers, as they are 5-12 in the month of May, and are 5-12 the last two seasons at PNC Park against the Pirates. The Pirates will be starting Paul Maholm who struggled a little in his last three starts. He allowed 15 earned runs in 17 innings of work over his last 3 games. I am not going to throw in the towel on Maholm just yet, because 2 of those 3 games were road games. The Pirates are 4-0 in all of Maholm's home starts, where he has allowed 18 hits and 6 earned runs in 26 innings of work. Maholm will be opposed by Manny Parra who has made it to the 6th inning only once in 8 starts. The Brewers have lost 3 of his last 4 starts despite the fact that he only allowed 11 earned runs in those games. There is a big disparity in the bullpens, where the Pirates pen has a 2.68 team ERA over their last 3 games and the Brewers have a team ERA of 5.70 over their last 3. The Pirates are hitting .341 against lefties over their last 10 games, while the Brewers are hitting only .141 against lefties in their last 10 games. Look for Maholm to get back on track tonight against a Brewers team that committed 6 errors in their series against Boston.

Seattle has lost 8 consecutive series since winning one over Oakland back on April 16th through 17th in a two game set. Their opponent today will be the San Diego Padres, who just happen to have the worst record in the Majors, and have not won a road series in over a month. Felix Hernandez will be getting the start for the Mariners. Seattle has lost 4 straight games that Hernandez has started, but to his credit, he is only getting 2.79 runs of support per game. He should break out of his slump today against the Padres, who have not been able to score runs this season. In fact they have managed only 8 runs in their last 3 games. Hernandez will be opposed by Shawn Estes of the Padres. Estes is making his second start since coming back from elbow surgery in 2006. He had a few minor league starts, and of concern here is that he allowed 13 hits and 8 earned runs in only 7 innings of work at AAA Portland, then was called back up to the Majors. This pattern sounds all to familiar, as Estes had a poor Spring Training stint as well with a 12.27 ERA. All the signs are showing that Estes pitching career is coming to a close. So why is this line not up over -200??? Estes won his first game back in the Majors against the Cubs on Tuesday, by allowing 7 hits and 2 earned runs in 5 innings of work. Today he will be facing a Seattle team that has a .323 Batting Average Against lefties at home this season. Hernandez is a strikeout pitcher, and should be able to pad his stats against one of the worst offenses in baseball this season.

Who would have thought that Vincente Padilla would be having such a great season? Padilla has allowed 4 earned runs in his last 26 innings of work, spanning over 4 games. His strikeout count is climbing with 16 in his last 17 innings pitched. These numbers are the reason the Rangers are 4-0 in his last 4 starts. Today he will have to be at his best against a Houston team that has scored 31 runs over their last 5 games. Padilla will be opposed by Roy Oswalt. Oswalt struggled earlier in the season, but has settled down and kept the Astros in his last 6 outings. Oswalt has allowed exactly 3 earned runs in his last 5 starts, contributing to a 4-1 team record. Oswalt will be facing a Ranger offense that is hitting on all cylinders, scoring 43 runs in their last 5 games. This could prove to be a shootout, and I will be backing a Rangers team that has plenty of firepower.

This should prove to be an interesting matchup between these two teams that are both on current 3 game winning streaks. Both teams are winning with quality pitching, but Cincinnati has had the hotter bats. Cleveland will be starting Jeremy Sowers who is being recalled for a spot start in this game. He does have one start on the season against the Yankees, and in that game he gave up 7 hits and 3 earned runs in 5 innings of work. He will be opposed by Johnny Cueto for Cincinnati. Cueto has struggled of late, giving up 22 hits and 15 earned runs over his last 11 innings of work. One thing that stands out in Cuento's stats is that he has given up 9 home runs in 8 games this season, with only one game that he did not give up the long ball. Cleveland has scored only 10 runs in their last 4 games, and the Cleveland offense will have to take advantage of Cuento with Harang and Volquez on deck for the other two games.

Toronto has won 2 road games in a row, with one win coming at Cleveland and the other to open the series against the Twins. It seems as if the offense is starting to come around, and Roy Halladay has got to be happy about it. The Blue Jays are scoring just 3.14 runs a game in his starts. Halladay has went 7+ innings in all but one of his starts on the season, allowing 55 hits and 23 earned runs in 63 innings of work. He also has 47 strike outs in those 63 innings. He will be opposed by Boof Bonser who has struggled in his last couple of starts. Bonser has allowed 11 earned runs in his last 10 innings of work, but the Twins won both of those starts although Bonser did not factor in the decisions in either game. Bonser faced the Detroit Tigers on the 4th of May, and the struggling Tiger lineup was able to get to Bonser for 6 runs in 6 innings. Look for much the same tonight. Toronto has been struggling, and facing Bonser with Halladay on the mound may be just what the doctor ordered.
